Today, 40 senior congressional leaders joined U.S. President Barack Obama around a table to find a way to reconcile differences and pass out healthcare reform legislation. No deal.  After seven hours of posturing, policy makers couldn’t get passed go on four fundamental, philosophical positions.

  1. What’s most critical?  Cost or Access
  2. Who steers the reform? Markets or Government
  3. Who should set the standards? Markets or Government
  4. Which approach is best? Comprehensive  or Incremental

For Democrats the answers for these four questions are: Access, Government, Government, and Comprehensive. Conversely, Republicans answer: Cost, Markets, Markets, Incremental. Zero out of Four matches.

Senator Kent Conrad of North Dekota stated, “We have a system that is characterized by chaos.”

Even the numbers don’t add up. “We’re bending it up (cost curve).” warned Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.  ”Ignoring costs does not remove them from taxpayers’ backs.”

Today’s summit exposed just how vast the gulf of differences are, even with the basics. We’re back at square one again.

For me, it’s Cost, Markets, Government and Comprehensive. Final answer. That’s two for two.  What about you?
